History & meaning
Abdi is what is left when a Somali speaker shortens Abdullahi. The working part is Arabic ʿabd, servant, the element that generates an enormous family of Muslim names by attaching itself to a name of God: Abdullahi, servant of God; Abdirahman, servant of the Merciful; Abdulkadir, servant of the Powerful. Somali handles the whole set the same way, clipping it back to the first two syllables, and the clipped form is not slang. It goes on identity cards. One quirk of the written language makes the point: the Latin orthography adopted in 1972 assigns the letter c to the Arabic ʿayn, so the name a Somali passport shows is Cabdi, and the same convention gives x to the sound at the end of Faarax, the Somali Farah.
What the name does not tell you is what language it landed in. Somali is Cushitic, a branch of Afroasiatic that it shares with Oromo and Afar; Arabic is Semitic, a different branch of the same old family. Somali did not inherit ʿabd — it borrowed it, along with essentially the entire stock of given names, across a thousand years of Islam and Red Sea trade. So the naming system sits on an Islamic substrate while the grammar underneath is something else entirely, and the native Somali layer survives as a small, well-loved minority: Guled, Liban, Samatar. Both layers appear together in the same three-name chains, which is why a Somali register can read Abdi Guled or Guled Abdi and mean two different men.
Why parents choose it
Outside the Horn, Abdi survives contact with English better than most Somali names: four letters, no vowel that an English speaker will mangle, and a form already shortened so nobody shortens it further. Inside it, the appeal is plainer. It is a devotional name that a two-year-old can say.

Somali practice fills the second slot with the father's given name, so a chosen middle name is a diaspora habit rather than a home one. Famous Abdis
Abdi Bile won the 1500 metres at the 1987 World Championships in Rome and remains the most decorated runner Somalia has produced. Abdi Nageeye, born in Mogadishu and running for the Netherlands, took the Olympic marathon silver in Tokyo in 2021. As a father's name it is everywhere in the diaspora: the actor Barkhad Abdi, Oscar-nominated for Captain Phillips, carries it that way, and so does Sir Mo Farah, who disclosed in 2022 that he was born Hussein Abdi Kahin.
