Privacy policy

What we collect

Nothing you type, because there is nowhere to type anything. Every page is a static HTML file, and the site has no accounts, comments, forms, newsletter, or login. What we do collect is audience measurement, through Google Analytics, described in full in the next section. Apart from that tag, the only JavaScript on the site is a half-kilobyte list filter that runs entirely in your browser, sends nothing anywhere, and is not required for any page to work.

Analytics

This site runs Google Analytics 4 so we can see which pages get read and which are ignored. It sets two first-party cookies in your browser, _ga and a second one beginning _ga_, which expire roughly two years after your last visit and exist to tell repeat visits apart from new ones.

For each page you open, Google receives the address of that page, the time, the page that referred you if there was one, your approximate location, and technical details about your device such as browser, operating system, language, and screen size. The approximate location is worked out from your IP address; Google Analytics 4 uses the address for that purpose and does not log or store it. What reaches us is aggregate reporting — visit counts, countries, popular pages — from which we cannot identify an individual reader.

Google processes this data for us under its own terms and privacy policy. If you would rather not be counted, any of these works: block cookies for this site in your browser settings, turn on your browser's tracking protection, use a content blocker, or install Google's Analytics opt-out add-on. The site behaves identically either way — nothing here depends on analytics, or on JavaScript at all.

What your browser sends anyway

Loading any website means your browser makes a request, and that request necessarily carries your IP address, the page you asked for, your user agent string, and sometimes a referring URL. Our hosting provider may record these in standard server access logs, as nearly every web host does, for the ordinary purposes of serving traffic, diagnosing faults, and blocking abuse. We do not use those logs to build profiles, and we do not combine them with the analytics data described below or with anything else.

Third parties

Google is the only one. The site loads no fonts, images, stylesheets, advertising, social buttons, comment systems, or session-recording tools from anyone, and the analytics tag described above is the single third-party script on the page. We sell nothing, and we share nothing with anybody else. If that ever changes, this page will say so and will name what is being collected.

Links out

We occasionally reference outside sources, such as the U.S. Social Security Administration's baby name statistics. Those sites have their own privacy policies and we have no control over them.

Children

This site is written for adults choosing names for children. It is not directed at children and has no accounts, uploads, or messaging, so there is no way for a child — or anyone else — to submit personal information to us. The analytics described above measure page visits and do not ask who is reading.

Your rights

Regulations such as the GDPR and the CCPA give you the right to access, correct, and delete personal data a site holds about you. We hold no accounts and no records you have given us, because there is no way to give us any. The analytics data described above sits with Google, is reported to us only in aggregate, and is not tied to a name, an email address, or an account. The most direct way to stop it being collected at all is to opt out using one of the methods listed under Analytics. If you contact us by email, we keep that email in order to reply to it, and we will delete it on request.
