History & meaning
The oldest joke in the Bible is an etymology. Genesis has God form adam, the man, from the dust of adamah, the ground — the pun sits in the Hebrew itself, and the word is an ordinary noun for a human being long before it is anybody's name. A third thread ties both words to adom, red, the colour of the earth in that country. Translators have argued about which sense to lead with for two thousand years.
Medieval Europe used the name steadily, and the surnames Adams, Adamson and McAdam are the fossil record of how steadily. It receded, then returned hard in the English-speaking world between the 1960s and the 1990s, when Adam was on every class list in Britain and the United States. That cohort has grown up: the name has since slipped out of the American top 100 while holding a top-tier place in France, remaining a Polish classic, and enjoying enormous use among Muslim families, for whom Ādam is the first of the prophets.
Why parents choose it
Adam is the least explaining a parent will ever have to do. Four letters, two syllables, no spelling variants worth arguing about, and instant recognition in English, French, Polish, Turkish and Arabic alike. Dropping out of the American top 100 has done it a favour: a name that was once merely everywhere now sounds plain in the good sense, a solid noun rather than a style choice.
Middle names for Adam

Adam Smith wrote The Theory of Moral Sentiments and The Wealth of Nations and spent his career as a moral philosopher rather than an economist.
