History & meaning
Alparslan is a title stacked on a title. Alp is the Old Turkic word for a hero, and arslan is the lion — both were honorifics that Turkic rulers collected and wore in front of their given names. The sultan the name belongs to was born Muhammad, son of Çağrı Beg; Alp Arslan was what his army and his chroniclers called him, and it is the part history kept. Written as one word, Alparslan, it has been a Turkish given name since the twentieth century; written as two, it is a chapter heading.
That chapter is 1071. On 26 August, near Manzikert — Malazgirt, in what is now Muş province in eastern Turkey — Alp Arslan's Seljuk force met the Byzantine field army and destroyed it, taking the emperor Romanos IV Diogenes prisoner. The Byzantine frontier in Anatolia collapsed, Turkic groups moved west through the gap over the following decades, and the peninsula began the long change of language and population that made it Turkey. Few battles have as clean a claim to having redrawn a country. Alp Arslan himself was dead within a year, killed by a captive commander he had ordered brought before him, and the anniversary is still marked every August at Malazgirt.
Why parents choose it
This is the heaviest name in the Turkish revival set, and nobody chooses it by accident. It says heroic lion twice over and points at a specific date. Practically, three syllables want a short surname behind them, and abroad it will be shortened to Alp within a week — which most families anticipate rather than resist.

Famous Alparslans
Alp Arslan the sultan is the reason the name exists. In the twentieth century it belonged to Alparslan Türkeş (1917–1997), the colonel turned politician who founded Turkey's Nationalist Movement Party — a divisive figure at home, and the bearer most Turks over fifty will think of first.
Consider instead
Alp alone is the same word without the freight, and it is what your son will be called anyway. Aslan takes the other half and keeps the lion. Kaan stays in the imperial register at a third of the length.
