History & meaning
Elves were not decoration in Norse belief. The álfar were a class of beings ranked alongside the Æsir, powerful enough to be sacrificed to, and the Eddas record that Álfheim was handed to the god Freyr as a tooth-gift. Parents accordingly built real names on them: Alfhild, Alfgeir, and Alfarr, which is where Alvar comes from. Its second element is normally taken as herr, army or warrior, though some readings prefer varr, watchful, which would make the name elf-guardian instead. Either way the elf is doing the work.
That is worth saying plainly, because most modern elf-names are borrowed out of fantasy fiction. Alvar is not: it is a Norse personal name with an unbroken paper trail into modern Swedish, and it sits beside the standalone Alf, which is the same first element used bare. Sweden has kept Alvar in the registry for centuries and it has come back sharply in the last two decades. A coincidence to note and dismiss: alvar is also a Swedish word for the thin limestone barrens of Öland. Same letters, no relation.
Why parents choose it
It is short, soft in the middle, and slightly strange in exactly the way parents currently want — two syllables, no nickname pressure, a meaning that is genuinely mythological rather than vaguely so. English speakers read it correctly on sight, which is not something every Nordic name can offer.

Consider instead
For the same element with nothing added, Alf is the bare elf. Arvid is the same length and register with an eagle instead of an elf. Ivar keeps the Norse weight and swaps the soft opening for a harder one.
