Before it meant anything winged, ángelos was a job. In classical Greek it named a runner or herald, whoever turned up with the news. The religious sense arrives with the Septuagint, where Greek-speaking Jewish translators used ángelos to render Hebrew mal'akh — also, originally, just "messenger" — and Christian Latin took it over as angelus. Italian wore that down to Angelo, and by the late Middle Ages it was one of the commonest male names in the peninsula.
Its Philippine life runs through Spain. Three centuries of Spanish rule installed a Catholic given-name stock on the islands that has never left, and Angelo shares that shelf with Gabriel, Basilio and Apolinario — the colonial layer, entirely distinct from native Tagalog names such as Bayani and Dakila. The technically Spanish form is Ángel, but Filipino registries carry Angelo in quantity too, and the shortening to Gelo is local and near-universal.
