Angus is the English spelling of Gaelic Aonghas, and its parts are unusually clear for a name this old: Old Irish óen, one, plus gus, force or vigour or choice. “One strength” is the standard rendering; “sole choice” catches the other half of what gus can mean. It belonged first to the mythological Aengus, the young god of the Tuatha Dé Danann, and then to a run of real men — Óengus mac Fergusa, the eighth-century king who dominated Pictland, and Óengus of Tallaght, the monk who compiled a calendar of saints in verse around the year 800.
