History & meaning
Two nouns, no glue. Áss is a god of the Æsir, the ruling family of the Norse pantheon, and bjǫrn is the bear. Norse parents did not invent names so much as assemble them from a closed stock of elements, and áss was one of the busiest openings on the shelf: it stands in front of a spear in Ásgeirr, in front of a cauldron in Áskell, and here in front of the largest animal anybody in the north had ever met. The compound is not a sentence and does not have to parse tidily, but this one lands well enough — a bear with the gods behind it.
The name never needed reviving; it ran straight out of the sagas into the Norwegian parish books. What it did do was wear down. Danish and Norwegian speech chipped the front off Ásbjǫrn and produced Esben and Espen, the same name with the gods rubbed out of the spelling, while Sweden landed on Esbjörn and Iceland kept Ásbjörn whole. Then the surname era arrived and froze a great many of these compounds in place: the folklorist Peter Christen Asbjørnsen, who collected the Norwegian folk tales with Jørgen Moe, is carrying somebody’s father around in his own name.
Why parents choose it
It is the maximal version of the bear names. Where Bjorn gives you the animal flat, Asbjorn gives you the animal with a claim attached, and it does so in a shape that is unmistakably Norwegian rather than generically Viking. The friction is real, though: an English-speaking child will hear AZ-born from every substitute teacher for eighteen years.

Famous Asbjorns
Asbjørn Halvorsen played for Norway and for Hamburger SV in the 1920s, ran Norwegian football through the 1930s and its bronze-medal Olympic side, and was arrested by the Gestapo and deported to German camps, which he survived by months. Asbjørn Sunde led the Osvald Group, the most active sabotage organisation of the German occupation of Norway. In Snorri’s Heimskringla, Asbjørn Selsbane kills the king’s steward in front of the king’s own hall, which is the sort of thing that gets a man a chapter.
Consider instead
Bjorn is the bear with nothing in front of it and half the spelling trouble. Esben is this exact name after Danish has finished smoothing it, and it survives an American classroom intact. Thorbjorn swaps the general divine for one specific god.
