History & meaning
Turkish ay means both moon and month, and it is one of the busiest word-parts in the modern Turkish name stock. Put it after a noun and you get Koray, glowing ember plus moon; put it in front and you get Ayhan and Aykut; give it to a daughter and you get Aylin. Berkay is the same machine run on berk, the Old Turkic adjective for firm and solid discussed on our page for Berk. Nobody constructs a claim out of the two halves. The parts are chosen because Turkish ears like them together, the way English parents like the shape of a name before they like its dictionary entry.
This puts Berkay in a different category from most of the Turkish names on this site. Alp and Kaan were revived: the words were sitting in eighth-century inscriptions and were brought back after the language reform reopened native vocabulary. Berkay was not revived, because there was nothing to revive. It was built, in the second half of the twentieth century, out of material the reform had made fashionable. There is no medieval Berkay. The oldest ones alive are in their fifties, and the name reads in Turkey as belonging squarely to the generations born from the 1980s on.
Why parents choose it
It solves the problem Berk creates. The same solid first syllable is there, but the open ending softens it and gives the name somewhere to go, and the moon supplies a bit of lift that a word meaning "firmly fastened" badly needs. Outside Turkey the spelling behaves well; the only reliable error is a first guess of BER-kay instead of behr-KY.

Famous Berkays
Berkay Şahin, who records under his first name alone, has been one of the most-played pop singers in Turkey since the late 2000s. The footballer Berkay Özcan, born in Germany in 1998 and capped by Turkey, has played in the Bundesliga and the Turkish Süper Lig. Both are exactly the age the name predicts.
Consider instead
Koray is the same moon element with an ember in front of it. Berk is the first half, blunter and older. Eren keeps the two-syllable modern shape but comes from a quieter place entirely.
