History & meaning
Birger is an agent noun with a job description in it. Old Norse bjarga means to save, help, or get someone out of danger — the verb survives in German as bergen, used of salvage crews and mountain rescue. A birgir is the person who does that. Among Norse names, which lean heavily on wolves, bears and battle, a name that simply means "the one who helps" stands out.
Two medieval Swedes fixed it in the national memory. Birger Jarl, who died in 1266, ran the kingdom as regent for his own son and is traditionally credited with founding Stockholm around 1252 and with pushing through the early peace laws that protected the home, the church, the assembly and women. His grandson King Birger Magnusson supplied the other kind of story: at the Nyköping banquet of 1317 he had his two brothers seized and imprisoned, they died in captivity, and he lost the throne for it. The name went on being ordinary anyway, peaked in Sweden around the early twentieth century, and now sits in the pool of grandfather names.
Why parents choose it
The meaning is the draw. Very few names carry a plain, unarmoured sense of usefulness, and Birger does it without softness. The pronunciation is the price of entry outside Scandinavia, where the y sound in the middle has to be taught once to everybody.

Birger Jarl is the one every Swedish schoolchild meets; his statue stands on Riddarholmen in the city he is credited with founding. Birger Ruud, the Norwegian ski jumper, won Olympic gold in 1932 and again in 1936 and was imprisoned at Grini during the German occupation of Norway. Birger Sjöberg wrote Fridas bok, one of the most loved Swedish song collections of the 1920s.
