History & meaning
Old Norse made pet forms by adding an -i to a stem and letting the vowel shift underneath, and Bjarni is what that process does to bjǫrn. The result is a bear cub: the same animal as Bjørn, scaled down and spoken fondly. The vowel change is why the two names look less like relatives than they are. Iceland still writes Bjarni; Denmark and Norway landed on Bjarne; Sweden largely skipped the diminutive and stayed with Björn.
The medieval Bjarni worth knowing sailed the wrong way. In about 986 Bjarni Herjólfsson set out from Iceland for Greenland, missed it in fog, and found himself looking at a low, wooded coastline that could not possibly be the ice cap he was expecting. He turned north-east and went home without going ashore; Leif Eriksson later bought his ship and sailed back to do the job properly. The modern name is a quieter thing. Bjarne was a Danish and Norwegian staple from the 1930s to the 1960s, dropped off the birth lists almost entirely, and now belongs to men in their sixties and seventies.
Why parents choose it
It is the only warm name in the Nordic bear family. Bjørn is blunt and Asbjørn is grand, but a cub is affectionate by definition, and the soft final syllable takes the growl out of the animal without losing it. For a Danish or Norwegian family that is the whole appeal. Outside Scandinavia the opening consonant cluster is the obstacle: BY- before a vowel is not a sound English begins words with, and the name will arrive as Barney or as a pause.

Famous Bjarnes
Bjarne Stroustrup, from Aarhus, designed C++ at Bell Labs in the early 1980s and wrote the book that taught most of a generation to use it. Bjarne Riis won the 1996 Tour de France and admitted in 2007 that he had done it on EPO. Bjarne Reuter is one of Denmark's most widely read novelists for young people, best known for Buster's World and The Boys from St Petri.

Bjørn is the full-grown animal and the far commoner name. Aksel matches its Danish register with a biblical rather than an animal source. Arne has the same two-syllable shape and the same mid-century Nordic feel.
