There is no dressing this up: Calvin means bald. Latin calvus passed into Old French as chauve, and a bald neighbour in medieval Picardy might find himself known as Cauvin or Chauvin. Nicknames of that kind hardened into hereditary surnames across northern France, and one of the families carrying it produced a lawyer's son in Noyon named Jean Cauvin. Following the scholarly habit of his century, he signed himself in Latin as Ioannes Calvinus, and Europe learned the name in that form.
