History & meaning
Start with the water. The Caspian is the largest enclosed body of inland water on earth, and it takes its English name from the Caspi, a people Herodotus and Strabo placed along its south-western coast in what is now Azerbaijan and northern Iran. The Greeks wrote them as Kaspioi and named the sea and the mountain pass, the Caspiae Pylae, after them. The tribe then left the historical record almost entirely, taking the meaning of their own name with them. Caspian is therefore geography rather than vocabulary: it describes a place, and the place is older than any explanation of it.
As a person's name it has one author. C.S. Lewis needed a name for the young Telmarine king of Narnia and took the sea's, first in Prince Caspian in 1951 and again in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader in 1952. Because Lewis belonged to the Inklings alongside J.R.R. Tolkien, Caspian is often shelved with Tolkien's invented names; it is neither Tolkien's nor invented. Real use followed the screen rather than the page — Ben Barnes played Caspian in the 2008 and 2010 film adaptations, and that is when the name began appearing on birth registers in Britain, Australia and, more sparingly, the United States.
Why parents choose it
Three syllables give it the sweep of a Latinate name without a Roman ending to explain, and the sea behind it supplies the imagery that most place names cannot. It shortens to Cas, which is about as gentle as a nickname gets, and it sits close enough to Casper to feel familiar while remaining, in practice, a name your child is unlikely to share with a classmate.

The name lives instead in culture: Lewis's prince across three Narnia books, Ben Barnes's screen version, the Massachusetts post-rock band Caspian who have recorded since 2004, and the sea itself, which supplies most of the world's wild caviar and is shared by five countries. Parents choosing Caspian are choosing a reference rather than a lineage, and the reference is a good one.
