History & meaning
Ottoman Turkish took its vocabulary of rule and poetry largely from Persian, and no Persian word served that vocabulary better than jahān. The world. It is the word inside the imperial style padişah-ı cihan, emperor of the world, and inside a hundred lines of court verse where a lover's face outshines it. Turkish spelling writes the Persian j as c, and that single letter is the clearest evidence of the borrowing: a native Turkic word would not begin that way. Cihan is a Persian word in Turkish clothes, and it is more honest to say so than to call it Turkic.
Follow the word and you get a map of where Persian court culture reached. Şehzade Cihangir, the youngest son of Süleyman the Magnificent and Hürrem Sultan, died at twenty-two in 1553; the mosque his father raised for him gave its name to the Istanbul district still called Cihangir. Two generations and three thousand kilometres away, the Mughal emperor who built the Taj Mahal ruled as Shah Jahan, king of the world, using the same noun. Modern Turkish has kept cihan as a slightly elevated synonym for dünya, the everyday word for world, and has kept the name in circulation alongside it.
Why parents choose it
The meaning is enormous and the sound is calm, which is a rare combination — the name promises scale without any of the noise of a warrior word. It is also one of the more portable Turkish names once the c is explained, since jee-HAHN maps easily onto sounds English already has. In Turkey it carries a faint sense of an older generation, which some families want and some do not.

Famous Cihans
Cihan Ünal, born in 1949, is one of the better-known Turkish film and stage actors of his generation, with a career running from the politically charged cinema of the 1970s into television. The name's real weight, though, is carried by its compounds and its history: Şehzade Cihangir, whose short life is written into the street plan of Istanbul, and the Mughal Shah Jahan, whose regnal title is the same word in its original language.

Ferhat is the other great Persian import in the Turkish name stock, from the doomed lover of the Ferhat and Şirin romance. Kaan matches the scale from the Turkic side, meaning emperor. Cenk is the same Persian route and the same Turkish c, in one hard syllable.
