Conrad is a two-element Germanic name, built the way most old Germanic names were: take two respected qualities and weld them together. Here they are kuoni, bold, and rāt, counsel. The second element is worth pausing on, because counsel meant something concrete in an early medieval hall — the advice a lord's men gave him, and the courage it sometimes took to give it. The same rād sits at the end of Ralph, where it is joined to wolf instead.
Germany made it a royal name. Conrad I was elected king of the East Franks in 911, and Conrad II founded the Salian dynasty and was crowned emperor in 1027; four German kings carried it in all. St Conrad, bishop of Constance, added the ecclesiastical half and was canonised in 1123. English speakers came to it late, mostly through nineteenth-century German emigration to Britain and America — which is also how the novelist arrived, since Joseph Conrad was born Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski and simply promoted his own third name to a surname when he began publishing in English.
