History & meaning
The bird comes first. Across the Turkic steppe the sunqur was the largest and most prized of the hunting falcons, valuable enough that Persian and Arabic borrowed the word and Mamluk emirs wore it as a name. The Magyars carried it west with the rest of their Turkic hunting vocabulary, and Csongor appears in medieval Hungarian charters as a personal name before disappearing for several centuries, as most of that stock did.
What brought it back was a play. In 1830 Mihály Vörösmarty took an old Hungarian verse romance and rebuilt it as Csongor és Tünde, in which a young man searches the world for a fairy he has glimpsed once, meets three travellers at a crossroads who have each given up on something different, and finds that the answer was where he began. It is the finest dramatic poem in the language and every Hungarian schoolchild reads it. Vörösmarty went looking in the old documents for a name that sounded properly Hungarian and pulled Csongor out; the play made it a name again. That is a normal route into modern Hungarian naming — Csaba and Hunor came back from books too, and the nineteenth century did most of the pulling.
Why parents choose it
Inside Hungary it signals a certain kind of household — one where the play is on the shelf. The sound is unusually solid for a Hungarian name, two closed syllables with the ch at the front doing all the work. Outside Hungary the cs stops readers dead, and any family using the name abroad will spend a lifetime saying "with a C-S, it's a CH".

Beyond individual bearers, the name's presence is the play: Csongor és Tünde is staged somewhere in Hungary most seasons, has been filmed and set to music, and its closing lines are among the most quoted in Hungarian poetry.
