History & meaning
Drahý is still the everyday Czech word for dear, in both senses — beloved and expensive — and it supplies the first half. The second is mír, peace, the element that also closes Jaromír, Lubomír and Russian Vladimir. Dear peace, precious peace: of all the old compounds this is one of the few that reads as a wish rather than a boast. South Slavic languages built the identical name from their own form of the root and call it Dragomir, which is why the two look like cousins rather than twins.
The famous bearer is a woman. Drahomíra of Stodor, a princess of the Hevelli, married Vratislav I of Bohemia and bore him Václav and Boleslav. When Vratislav died in 921 she was left governing for a child, in open rivalry with her mother-in-law Ludmila, who was strangled at Tetín later that year; the chronicles, all written later and none of them friendly, have blamed Drahomíra ever since, and Czech legend finishes the job by having the ground swallow her and her carriage at Hradčany. Historians treat the sources with caution. The masculine form has never had a comparable bearer, and it travels mainly on the strength of hers.

The meaning does the work. It is the gentlest of the Czech -mír names and the least martial thing in a tradition full of glory and war bands, which suits parents who want the old compound structure without the swagger.

Drahomír Josef Růžička was born in Bohemia in 1870, raised in Iowa and trained as a physician in New York, where he became one of the leading pictorialist photographers in America and signed his prints D. J. Ruzicka. Drahomír Kolder sat in the Czechoslovak Communist leadership through the 1960s and was among the group that called in the 1968 invasion, which is the other reason older Czechs recognise the name.
