Emmanuel is a sentence before it is a name. Hebrew immanu, with us, joins El, God, to make a declaration rather than a description: God is with us. It enters the record in Isaiah 7:14 as a sign given to King Ahaz of Judah, and Matthew 1:23 quotes that verse in its opening chapter, which is how the word became a fixture of Christian liturgy and of the Advent hymn O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.
Because it arrived in Europe through Greek and Latin scripture rather than through migration, the name travelled as a devotional choice and picked up a spelling for each language it landed in. Iberian speakers wore it down to Manuel, which then went its own way as a name in its own right. German, Romanian, Scandinavian and Jewish usage prefer Emanuel with one m, and Immanuel is the form the philosopher Kant used. In the twentieth century the name became enormously common in West Africa, and English-speaking families increasingly meet it through Nigerian, Ghanaian, Filipino and Latin American neighbours rather than through the Bible.
