History & meaning
Genesis holds two men called Enoch. The first is a son of Cain, remembered because his father named the world’s first city after him. The second is the one who mattered to later readers: the seventh generation from Adam, son of Jared, father of Methuselah. His entry in the genealogy of Genesis 5 breaks the pattern. Everyone else lives, begets and dies; Enoch lives 365 years, walks with God, and then “was not, for God took him.” He and Elijah are the only figures in the Hebrew Bible who leave without dying, and that single unexplained line generated centuries of speculation.
Most of it collected in the Book of Enoch, written in Aramaic and Hebrew in the last few centuries BCE, fragments of which turned up among the Dead Sea Scrolls. It survives complete only in Ge’ez and is canonical scripture in the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church; the Epistle of Jude quotes it directly, which kept it in Christian conversation even where it was never canonical. The given name reached English speakers by a plainer route: Puritan families took it up in the seventeenth century and carried it to America, and Tennyson’s narrative poem Enoch Arden made it a Victorian household word.
Why parents choose it
Enoch is two hard syllables that sound older than almost anything else on a class list, which is exactly the appeal for parents already drawn to Ezra, Silas and Boaz. It is scriptural without being one of the twelve names everyone recognises, it needs no spelling out, and its central story is a good one to grow into.
