History & meaning
Enzo is a rare case where the honest answer is that the reference books disagree, and have for a long time. The oldest famous bearer is Enzo of Sardinia, illegitimate son of the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II, captured at Fossalta in 1249 and held in Bologna until he died there more than twenty years later. Medieval documents give him as Entius or Encius, and historians generally read that as an Italian handling of Heinz, the German pet form of Heinrich that ran in his family. On that account Enzo inherits Heinrich's meaning: heim and rīc, home and ruler.
The competing account is simpler and, for modern usage, probably truer. Italian is full of names ending in -enzo — Lorenzo, Vincenzo, Innocenzo — and Enzo works as the affectionate stub of any of them. Plenty of twentieth-century Italian Enzos were christened Vincenzo. Neither story cancels the other, since a Germanic import and a native Italian clipping can arrive at the same two syllables independently. What is certain is that the name stood alone early: Enzo Ferrari was registered under it at birth in 1898. From Italy it spread outward, becoming a common French choice through the 1990s and 2000s and a familiar sight on Brazilian birth registries, and only then reaching the United States.
Why parents choose it
Sound, almost entirely. Two syllables, a hard Z in the middle, an open O at the end, and not one consonant cluster for a small child to trip over. It reads unmistakably Italian while being shorter and easier for English speakers than Leonardo, and it arrives with a Ferrari attached at no extra charge.
