The church route took Latin Iohannes straight into Irish and produced Eoin, which is the form Irish-language Bibles use for both John the Baptist, Eoin Baiste, and John the Evangelist. The everyday route came with the Normans: French Jehan was heard and respelled as Seán. One name, two arrivals several centuries apart, and Irish kept them as separate names rather than choosing. Underneath both sits the Hebrew Yōhānān, God is gracious — the same root that produced Johannes, Ivan, Jean and Juan.
The other thing to know about Eoin is what it is not. Eoghan is a different Gaelic name, from Old Irish Éogan, usually explained as born of the yew and anglicised as Owen or Eugene. Spoken quickly the two are close to indistinguishable, which is why Irish speakers often settle the question by asking how it is written.
