History & meaning
Welsh took the Latin Iohannes and made Ieuan of it, which spoken quickly became Ifan. When Welsh names were written down in English spelling under the Tudors, Ifan came out as Evan, and the surname Evans — son of Ifan — followed it. Welsh had a second go at the same source with Siôn, which produced Jones. The two commonest surnames in Wales are therefore both descendants of John, arrived at along different roads.
Two confusions are worth clearing. Hebrew even does mean stone, and it sits inside Ebenezer, but it has nothing to do with this name: Evan is Welsh, and its meaning runs back through John to Yohanan, “Yahweh is gracious.” Scottish Ewan and Euan are a separate matter again, anglicising the Gaelic Eòghann. Evan left Wales for general English use in the nineteenth century, reached America with Welsh emigration, and became broadly popular there in the closing decades of the twentieth.
Why parents choose it
Evan is short, has exactly one spelling anyone will attempt, and needs no nickname to soften it. It reads as friendly rather than formal, carries real Welsh heritage for families who want it, and passes unremarked in a classroom for families who do not.
