History & meaning
The Greek Euandros is a compliment paid in two words: eu, good, and andros, of a man. Roman writers gave the name to an Arcadian exile who founded a settlement on the Palatine Hill generations before Romulus. Virgil puts him at the centre of Aeneid VIII, an old man hosting Aeneas on the ground where Rome will stand, and Livy credits him with establishing the rites of Hercules at the Ara Maxima. Roman tradition also thanked him for bringing the Greek alphabet to Italy.
The second Evander never touched Greece. In the Highlands and the Hebrides, clerks writing English needed equivalents for Gaelic names, and they matched by sound and dignity rather than by meaning: Alasdair became Alexander, Eachann became Hector, and Iomhar became Evander. Iomhar is the Gaelic form of Old Norse Ívarr, a legacy of Viking settlement in the isles. So a Scot recorded as Evander in a parish book was almost certainly called Iomhar at home.

Evander gives the plain, popular Evan a longer and older frame, and it lands in the small family of -ander names that includes Alexander without carrying Alexander's crowd.
