History & meaning
Gabriel is the announcing angel — the one who explains Daniel's visions, tells Zechariah about John, tells Mary about Jesus, and in Islamic tradition delivers the Quran to Muhammad. The Hebrew is a small sentence, gavri'el, God is my strength. Hungarian took the name in with Christianity around the year 1000 and then did to it what it did to all of them: cut the foreign tail off. Gabriel lost its ending, the first vowel lengthened under the fixed initial stress, and out came Gábor — a two-syllable Hungarian word with a Hebrew sentence inside it.
That trimming is worth noticing because it is systematic. Alexander became Sándor, Nicholas became Miklós, Blasius became Balázs. Hungarian never carried a borrowed name unchanged; it rebuilt each one around a stressed first syllable, because that is where Hungarian stress goes and nothing moves it. The result is a Christian name-stock entirely conventional in content and completely un-European in sound, which is a fair description of the language itself.
Why parents choose it
Warm, short, and immediately readable abroad, where people will simply see Gabriel's cousin. In Hungary it sits in that middle distance where a name is neither fashionable nor dated, which is where the durable ones live. Famous Gábors
Gábor Bethlen ruled Transylvania from 1613 to 1629 and made a small principality between two empires into something that mattered, funding schools, sending students to Heidelberg and intervening in the Thirty Years' War. Gábor Szabó left Hungary in 1956, reached Berklee, and became one of the distinctive jazz guitarists of the 1960s, playing with Chico Hamilton and Charles Lloyd before recording under his own name. Gábor Talmácsi took the 125cc motorcycling world championship in 2007.
