Almost every Basque man's name is a saint's name in Basque clothing. Gaizka is not. It is a Basque word, put to work doing the job that Salvador does in Spanish. The verb is gaizkatu, to save, to deliver, to get someone clear of harm, and gaizkatzaile is a saviour. Sabino Arana offered the noun as the Basque counterpart of Salvador when he assembled his calendar of Basque saints' names, the Deun-Ixendegi Euzkotarra of 1910 — a title itself made of Basque parts, deun holy, ixen name, -degi a collection of them.
The z in the middle needs a note. Basque z is a sharp s made with the tip of the tongue, not the Castilian th and not the buzz of English zoo, so the first syllable of Gaizka sounds like the English word "guys". Spanish speakers from outside the Basque provinces routinely give it the Castilian treatment, which Basque speakers notice.
