Giles is the English shape of Latin Aegidius, which came from Greek aigidion, a young goat, the diminutive of aix. That sounds like a modest thing to call a child until you follow the root sideways: aigis, the goatskin that Zeus and Athena wore into battle, is the word English took as aegis, protection. The name therefore sits on a hinge between a kid in a field and a shield that turns arrows, and medieval writers, who liked that sort of thing, made the most of it.
What actually spread the name was the saint. Aegidius was a hermit who settled in the wooded country near the mouth of the Rhône in the late seventh century. His legend has him living on the milk of a hind, and taking in his own hand the arrow a Visigothic hunting party had loosed at her — which is why he is shown in art with a deer at his knee. The abbey that grew over his grave, Saint-Gilles-du-Gard, stood on a main pilgrim road to Compostela, and his cult travelled with the traffic. He became patron of beggars, of the disabled and of blacksmiths, and more than a hundred English churches took his dedication: St Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh, St Giles Cripplegate in London, the broad street of St Giles in Oxford. From the church door the name moved to the font.
