History & meaning
Start with the honest part: nobody is sure what Gorm means. The standard account treats Gormr as a contraction of Guðþormr — the name that survives in Norwegian as Guttorm — with guð, god, in front and a second element that has been read several ways and settled none. Alternative derivations exist and none has won. For a Norse name that is unusual, and it is worth saying plainly rather than borrowing a confident gloss from somewhere else.
What is not in doubt is the man. Gorm the Old, who died around 958, is the first king of Denmark whose existence historians accept without argument, and the dynasty he founded at Jelling in Jutland has never been broken — the present Danish monarchy descends from him. At Jelling he raised a runestone for his wife: Gorm king made this monument for Thyra his wife, Denmark’s adornment. His son Harald raised a much larger one beside it announcing that he had won all Denmark and Norway and made the Danes Christian. Between them the two stones carry the earliest use of the name Denmark on Danish soil and the country’s conversion notice, which is why Danes call them the nation’s birth certificate. They stand where they were raised, in the open, at a UNESCO site; a male skeleton found beneath the floor of the nearby church in 1978 is generally taken to be Gorm himself, moved indoors by his Christian son.
Why parents choose it
One hard syllable and a thousand years of continuity behind it. Danish parents who choose Gorm are making a deliberate historical statement, and they know it. English speakers should be warned that the sound lands somewhere near a growl, which is either the entire appeal or the reason to keep reading.

Famous Gorms
The king dominates the name so completely that in Denmark it functions almost as a historical reference rather than a personal one. The Danish chef and television cook Gorm Wisweh is the best-known living bearer, and a handful of Danish writers and academics keep it in print. Outside Denmark the name has essentially no presence at all, which for once is an accurate description rather than a hedge.
Consider instead
Harald is Gorm’s son and the king who finished what he started. Knut gives the same medieval Danish weight with far wider recognition. Svend is the plainest of the old Danish royal names and the easiest to live with.
