A grieve was the man who ran a farm or estate for its owner, collecting rents and settling disputes, and the word descends from Old English gerēfa — the same root that gives us reeve, and that survives in sheriff, originally the shire-reeve. Grayson was the grieve's son. A second derivation is competing for the name and cannot be ruled out: some Graysons are simply the sons of a man nicknamed Gray for his hair.
The surname stayed a surname for six centuries. Its rebirth as a first name is American and recent, and it rode the wave that also carried Jackson and Mason up the charts, though Grayson has the advantage of a nickname the others lack. Comic readers had heard it for decades before parents used it: Robin has been Dick Grayson since 1940.
