History & meaning

Underneath the Portuguese spelling is a Frankish compound, Willahelm: will or determination, plus helmet or protection. Resolute protector is the settled gloss, and it survived the journey across three languages without losing a syllable of sense. What changed was the front of the word. Romance speakers had no W, so every Germanic name and noun that began with one came in wearing a gu instead — werra became guerra, war, and Willahelm became Guillaume in France, Guillermo in Castile, Guillem in Catalonia and Guilherme in Portugal. The G at the start of this name is a fossil of a sound Portuguese could not make.

No Portuguese king ever bore it, which sets Guilherme apart from most of the country's heavyweight names; Portuguese schoolbooks meet the name mainly as Guilherme, o Conquistador, their term for William of Normandy. It grew instead from below, as a saint's name and then a registry staple, and in the last forty years it has become one of the commonest names given to boys in both Portugal and Brazil. Brazilian letters have their own Guilherme in Guilherme de Almeida, the São Paulo poet who helped organise the Semana de Arte Moderna of 1922 and was later crowned prince of Brazilian poets by his readers.

Reading gui and lh

Two spelling conventions collide here and neither is hard once named. The U in gui is not pronounced: it is a silent marker that keeps the G hard in front of an E or an I, exactly as in Spanish guitarra. So the first syllable is “ghee”, never “jee”. Then comes lh, which is a single sound, the “ly” heard in the middle of million or in Spanish llave — not an L followed by an H. Put them together with the stress on the third syllable: gee-LYAIR-muh in Portugal, where the final E fades, and gee-LYEHR-mee in Brazil, where it rings out as an “ee”.

Why parents choose it

Four syllables of formality with a one-syllable escape hatch. Gui does everything Will does for an English speaker, and the full name looks impressive on a document without looking invented. For a bilingual family it also has a clean English counterpart to fall back on, which is not true of most Portuguese names.

Middle names for Guilherme

Famous Guilhermes

Guilherme de Almeida, who died in 1969, was a modernist poet and the translator who brought Baudelaire into Brazilian Portuguese. Guilherme Arana plays at left-back for Atlético Mineiro and the Brazilian national team. Guilherme Marinato, born in Rio de Janeiro, kept goal for Lokomotiv Moscow for over a decade and, after naturalisation, for Russia.
