History & meaning
The oldest Swedish form is Gautstafr. The first element is Gautr, the word behind Geat and Goth and also a byname of Odin; the second is stafr, a staff or a support. Put together they give the traditional gloss, "staff of the Goths" — a rod of office rather than a walking stick. That reading is the standard one, but it is not unopposed: some scholars think the name was reshaped from the Slavic Gostislav during the long contact between Sweden and the lands east of the Baltic, and the medieval spellings are messy enough to leave the question open.
What is not in doubt is what the name did next. Gustav Eriksson Vasa was elected king on 6 June 1523, pulled Sweden out of the Kalmar Union with Denmark, broke with Rome, and turned an elective crown into a hereditary one — the reason Sweden dates its national day to his election. Five more kings followed, among them Gustav II Adolf, the general of the Thirty Years' War who was killed at Lützen in 1632, and Gustav III, whose assassination at a masked ball in 1792 gave Verdi an opera plot. No other Swedish name carries that much state history in two syllables.
