History & meaning
Hayato began as a collective noun, not a personal one. In the seventh and eighth centuries the Yamato court used 隼人 for the peoples of southern Kyushu, the Satsuma and Ōsumi districts that make up modern Kagoshima Prefecture. They were slow to be absorbed, rebelled against the court in 720, and afterwards were brought to the capital where they served as guards and performed set ritual duties at ceremonies. The word kept a reputation for hardiness long after the people stopped being a separate category, and Kagoshima still carries a Hayato district on its map.
The characters chosen for them explain the reputation. 隼 is hayabusa, the peregrine falcon, the fastest animal alive when it stoops on prey, and Japan has kept reaching for it — the national space agency named its asteroid-sample missions Hayabusa and Hayabusa2, which returned material from Itokawa in 2010 and from Ryugu in 2020.
