History & meaning
The Germanic original is Haimirich. Heim is the ancestor of English home, but it meant something more definite than a house: the settled enclosure, the family holding, the piece of ground a man was responsible for. Rīk is the ruler word that stands behind Latin rex and turns up at the end of Frederick and Roderick. Put together, the name promises authority over an estate rather than a kingdom, which did not stop the Salian and Hohenstaufen emperors from wearing it for two hundred years. The Dutch form has a letter the others lack. There is no d in Haimirich; it grew in the mouth between the n and the r because that pairing is awkward to say, exactly as it did in English thunder, which was thunor in Old English.
No name shows the old Dutch naming rules better. Families did not choose names, they inherited them on a fixed pattern: the first son took his father's father, the second his mother's father, the third an uncle, and so on down a settled order called vernoemen. The result was a country running on a dozen names, Hendrik and Cornelis and Jan among them, recycled every second generation for four hundred years. Why parents choose it

Hendrik Petrus Berlage designed the Beurs in Amsterdam and is generally treated as the father of modern Dutch architecture. Hendrick Avercamp, who was deaf and known in his lifetime as de stomme van Kampen, painted the frozen canals of the Little Ice Age and almost nothing else.
