History & meaning
Naming sons by their order of arrival is one of the oldest live patterns in Japanese, and Ichiro sits at the head of the queue: Ichiro first, Jiro second, Saburo third, Shiro fourth, Goro fifth. The counting character does the obvious work. The second character, 郎, meant a young man in classical usage and then hardened into the default ending for a male name, which is why so many Japanese men born before the war have names finishing in -ro. Taro 太郎, big son, is the grander and older way to name a first boy; Ichiro is the plainer one, and reads slightly more matter-of-fact in Japanese for exactly that reason.
The -rō names ran Japanese registers until the 1960s and then dropped away quickly, replaced first by the -shi and -ki generation and then by the -to names of the present day. That makes Ichiro a period marker: Ichiro Hatoyama was Prime Minister from 1954 to 1956, and Ichiro Ozawa has been a fixture of Japanese politics since the 1970s, both of them named in the ending’s heyday. The name’s second life was made by one man. From 1994 the Orix BlueWave put ICHIRO rather than SUZUKI across the shoulders of a young outfielder, and a perfectly ordinary Japanese given name became a single word recognised in two countries.
