History & meaning
Latin left a great deal behind in Wales, and Iestyn is part of the residue. Roman Britain used Iustinus freely, the Welsh church kept it in circulation, and normal sound change delivered Iestyn. The meaning is entirely Latin: iustus, just, the word underneath justice. It arrived early enough to be naturalised, which is why the name feels native rather than borrowed in a way that Iestyn's cousin Justin never quite does in English.
Two men hold the name in Welsh memory. St Iestyn, an early saint about whom the sources are thin and the church dedications plentiful, is remembered at the two parishes called Llaniestyn — llan being an enclosure and then a church, which is how a third of Welsh place names begin. The other is Iestyn ap Gwrgant, who ruled Morgannwg in the second half of the eleventh century and lost it to Norman incomers around 1091. Later Glamorgan tradition, some of it embroidered by the antiquary Iolo Morganwg, made him the villain who invited the Normans in; historians treat that account with caution. Either way, he was the last of his line.
Why parents choose it
Iestyn reads as clearly Welsh but is not hard: an English speaker who has heard it once will say it right. It carries a virtue as its meaning without announcing it in English, which is a distinction worth having if names like Justice feel too direct.
