Almost every baby name book tells you Ignatius means fire. Almost every baby name book is wrong. This is a Roman family name older than the Latin word it supposedly comes from, and the honest answer to what it means is that nobody knows.

History & meaning
The Romans had a gens Egnatia long before any Christian bore the name, and Egnatius is the older spelling: the Via Egnatia, the great road across the Balkans, was laid out in the second century BC and named for a proconsul called Gnaeus Egnatius. Etruscan supplied Rome with a good deal of its onomastic furniture, and Egnatius is generally filed there — which is another way of saying the meaning is lost, because Etruscan is only partly deciphered. When the spelling drifted from Egnatius to Ignatius, Latin speakers heard ignis, fire, and the association stuck hard enough that it is now repeated everywhere as fact. It is a beautiful piece of folk etymology, and it is not the etymology.
Two saints did the work of keeping the name alive. Ignatius of Antioch, bishop and martyr, was taken to Rome under guard around AD 108 and wrote seven letters on the road that are among the earliest Christian documents outside the New Testament. Fourteen centuries later a wounded Basque soldier named Íñigo López de Loyola took Ignatius as his religious name, founded the Society of Jesus, and gave the world the Spiritual Exercises. Every Jesuit school, every boy named Ignacio in Bilbao or Guadalajara, traces back to him. The fire story survives partly because it suits both men so well.
Why parents choose it
Ignatius is a maximalist name: four syllables, a hard opening, a soft landing, and a shelf full of history behind it. Parents who pick it are usually after the Iggy hiding inside — a nickname that is warm and slightly comic, and that keeps the full name from tipping into pomp. It is also one of the few names that reads as devoutly Catholic and as literary eccentric at the same time.

Ignatius Sancho, born about 1729 on a slave ship and later a London shopkeeper, composer and letter writer, was the first Black Briton known to have voted in a parliamentary election. Ignacy Jan Paderewski was a world-famous pianist before becoming prime minister of Poland in 1919. In fiction, Ignatius J. Reilly of A Confederacy of Dunces is the name's great comic monument.

Xavier belonged to Loyola's closest companion and carries the same Basque-Jesuit history in a form Americans already use. Augustine gives you comparable church weight with a gentler sound and the nickname Gus. Atticus matches the three-plus-syllable Latin rhythm and the bookish air without the liturgy.
