History & meaning
Jon is the shortest name on the Basque register and, for the last thirty years, close to the commonest. It is John: Hebrew Yohanan, "Yahweh has been gracious", the name of the Baptist and of the evangelist, and therefore the most-given man's name in Christian history. The older and fuller Basque form is Joanes, and it belongs to a landmark — Joanes Leizarraga, a priest from Lapurdi, published the first Basque New Testament at La Rochelle in 1571, one of the earliest substantial books printed in the language.
How you say the j depends on where you are standing. Basque j is a y-glide across much of the country, so Jon is "yon"; in Gipuzkoa and in Spanish mouths it hardens towards the Castilian jota. Both are ordinary Basque and speakers argue about it amiably. The older spelling Ion shows the y plainly and is still in use. Worth flagging for English readers: Jon also exists in Scandinavia and in English as a clipped John or Jonathan, so a Jon in Oslo, a Jon in Ohio and a Jon in Bilbao carry the same Hebrew name by three unrelated routes, and only the third one is a name in its own right rather than a shortening.
