Aodh is one of the oldest names in Ireland, borne by a god associated with fire and by so many kings that it was for centuries among the commonest male names in the country; the word itself means fire. Put Mac in front and you have Mac Aodhagáin, son of Aodhagán, which English clerks wrote down as Keegan, Kegan, MacEgan and Egan. The Mac Aodhagáin were not an ordinary family.
