History & meaning
Southern England says church and the north says kirk, and the split goes back to Norse settlement. Both words descend ultimately from Greek kyriakón, "belonging to the Lord", but the northern form arrived through Old Norse kirkja and stuck fast in Scots and the dialects of Yorkshire, Cumbria and Northumberland. Anywhere the Norse settled you can still read it on the map, from Kirkcudbright to Ormskirk.
Surnames came next. A family living beside the parish church became the Kirks, exactly as their southern neighbours became the Churches, and a hundred compound surnames grew from the same word. As a first name Kirk is almost entirely a twentieth-century American development, and it has a clear cause: Kirk Douglas, born Issur Danielovitch in Amsterdam, New York, chose the name himself and then spent the 1950s as one of the biggest stars in Hollywood. Star Trek gave it a second engine in 1966 with Captain James T. Kirk. Neither association has kept it in circulation, and the name now reads firmly mid-century.
Why parents choose it
Kirk is a single closed syllable with two hard consonants, which makes it carry across a room and sit well in front of a long surname. It is also one of the few English names with a plainly religious meaning that does not sound pious, since almost nobody outside Scotland hears the word inside the name.
