History & meaning
Magnus is not really a Norse name at all: it is a Latin adjective that arrived attached to a person. Charlemagne was Carolus Magnus in Latin, and northern ears took the second word for part of the name, so that when a Norwegian king wanted his son to carry the emperor's prestige in the eleventh century, the boy was called Magnus. From that single act it spread across the whole North. Swedish then did what Swedish does to long borrowed words: it shortened. Magnus lost its middle, the vowel rounded, and by the late Middle Ages Måns was on tax rolls and church registers as a name in its own right. The patronymic it left behind, Månsson, is still one of the commonest surnames in Sweden.
The pair is a neat demonstration of how register works in Nordic naming. Magnus is the version on the coronation document; Måns is the version the neighbours used. Swedish has kept both, and they now feel like different names — one stately, one plainspoken and faintly rural. Sweden also has a long habit of calling a cat Måns, roughly as English reaches for Tom, which adds a domestic warmth the full form never gets near.
