History & meaning
Behind Matteo is the Hebrew Mattityahu: mattan, a gift, joined to the shortened form of the divine name. Gift of God, and unusually for a biblical name the gloss is not disputed. The bearer was the tax collector called from his booth in the gospel — traditionally identified with the Levi of Mark and Luke — who is credited with the first gospel and drawn ever after with a winged man at his shoulder. Caravaggio painted the moment of the calling for a chapel in Rome, and it is still there.
The spelling is where this page earns its keep. Mateo with one t is Spanish. Matteo with two is Italian, and the double letter is not decoration: Italian actually holds a doubled consonant, so the t in mat-TEH-o is measurably longer than the t in Spanish ma-TEH-o. Portuguese and Brazilian registers use Mateus and Matheus. And Italian keeps a separate name for a separate apostle — Mattia, from Matthias, the disciple chosen by lot to replace Judas — so the two are never confused in Italy the way English blurs Matthew and Matthias.
Why parents choose it
Three syllables, all of them open, and no consonant cluster to trip over. The ending is the other thing worth knowing: Italian has no silent letters and no glide here, so the last two vowels are sounded separately, TEH-o, not “tay-oh” run into one. Teo is the short form Italians actually use, and it is charming.
For families on both sides of an ocean it is a rare thing: a name that an English speaker, a Spaniard and an Italian will each recognise instantly, with only the spelling to argue about.
