History & meaning
Slavic makes names two ways. It welds two words together, which is the system described on Stanisław, and it clips the result and adds a suffix. Miloš is the second kind: the element mil, dear or gracious, plus -oš, one of the affectionate endings Czech hangs on a shortened name, as in Luboš and Bohuš. It started life as a pet form of long compounds like Miloslav, and then the pet form was baptised in its own right and the long one quietly retired — the same road that produced Radek and Zbyněk.
The name has two national lives. In Bohemia it was a nineteenth-century revival pick that peaked in the middle of the twentieth century. In Serbia it never went away, because it belongs to the founding stories: Miloš Obilić is the knight of the Kosovo epics credited with killing Sultan Murad on the battlefield in 1389, a deed that is historically attested even if the identity of the assassin is a matter of legend, and Miloš Obrenović led the Second Serbian Uprising in 1815 and founded a dynasty. That double citizenship makes Miloš one of the few names read as fully native from Bohemia to the Danube.

It is short, warm and finished with a sound English can actually make. The single obstacle is the háček, which disappears on foreign paperwork and takes the sh with it; a family abroad should expect to answer to MEE-los and decide in advance whether that matters.
