Morgan is old enough to have left its name on a map. Glamorgan is Gwlad Morgan, Morgan's land — Morgannwg in Welsh — traditionally the territory of a king called Morgan, usually identified with Morgan ab Owain in the tenth century or the earlier Morgan Mwynfawr. The name itself is Old Welsh Morcant, and the argument is all in the second syllable: cant gives “circle” or “rim”, which yields nothing quotable, while the tidy “sea-born” that dictionaries repeat really belongs to the neighbouring name Morgen. There is a long-standing and rather lovely conjecture that Pelagius, the fifth-century British theologian, was born with a Brittonic sea-name of this family and had it translated into Greek. Conjecture is all it is.
The part that trips people up is gender, so here it is flatly: Morgan is given to boys and to girls, and the Welsh original is masculine. In Wales, Morgan on a birth certificate means a son. In the United States the two lines crossed in the late 1980s and girls have led ever since, which has left American ears reading the name as feminine and British ears reading it as male. Morgan le Fay muddies the water without explaining it — the enchantress arrives in French romance from a separate Brittonic feminine name, and she is not the reason for the modern American pattern, though she has kept the sound available to both.
