Murilo began life as somebody's surname. Murillo is a place name repeated across northern Spain — Murillo el Fruto and Murillo el Cuende in Navarre, Murillo de Río Leza in La Rioja — and is traditionally explained as a diminutive of muro, a wall, from Latin mūrus. Families from those villages carried the name south, and one of them produced Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, the Seville painter of ragged street children and luminous Virgins whose reputation in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries stood alongside Velázquez.
How it became a Brazilian first name is a story about Brazilian naming rather than Spanish etymology. Brazil has always been willing to lift an admired foreign surname and hand it to a baby — the country is full of men called Wellington, Washington, Wilson and Nelson for exactly that reason. Murilo arrived by the same route, lost a letter to Portuguese spelling, and settled in as an ordinary name. Murilo Benício has been a leading man in Globo television drama since the 1990s.
