History & meaning
The country is named after this syllable. Việt Nam 越南 means the Việt of the south, and the compound was settled in 1804, when the Qing court approved a name for the new state that Emperor Gia Long had asked to call Nam Việt and Beijing preferred to reverse. South is not a neutral direction in Vietnamese history: Nam tiến, the southward march, describes six centuries of settlement pushing from the Red River delta down the coast into Champa and then the Mekong delta, and miền Nam carried a second, sharper meaning between 1954 and 1975. A boy called Nam is standing in a good deal of geography.
The character comes with company. A separate Sino-Vietnamese word nam, written 男, means male, and turns up in nam giới (men) and nam sinh (a male student); a third, 楠, is a prized hardwood. Because Vietnamese writes all three the same way in the Latin alphabet, name lists sometimes gloss Nam as male. Boys given the name are normally 南, and if a family means otherwise they will tell you. Nam is also a Korean surname, 남, from the same Chinese character and the same meaning, which is why the name occasionally turns up in unexpected places.
Why parents choose it
It is the Vietnamese name that costs an English speaker nothing. Three letters, one syllable, no tone mark, no cluster, and a spelling that is read correctly on the first attempt by people who have never met a Vietnamese name before. Set against that, it is a quiet name in Vietnam rather than a striking one, which some parents want and some do not.

Famous Nams
Nam Cao (1915–1951) wrote Chí Phèo and Lão Hạc, the two short stories most Vietnamese can quote from, and was killed by French forces while on assignment; the pen name is assembled from the district and village he came from. Lý Hoàng Nam won the Wimbledon boys' doubles title in 2015 and became the first Vietnamese player to take a singles gold at the Southeast Asian Games. The syllable also names Nam Định, one of the old cities of the Red River delta.
Consider instead
Sơn 山 is mountain, the same kind of plain landscape noun with more weight in the sound. Hải 海 is sea, and pairs with Nam constantly in compounds. Việt is the other half of the country's name, and about as direct a statement of heritage as a Vietnamese name can make.
