History & meaning
Nathan is a whole sentence: natan, "he gave", with the giver left unnamed because everyone knew who was meant. Lengthen it and the subject appears — Nathaniel is "God has given", Jonathan is "Yahweh has given". Nathan is the compressed original, and it is older than either as a standing name.
Its bearer is one of the more remarkable figures in the Hebrew Bible. After David engineers the death of Uriah to take Bathsheba, the court prophet Nathan comes to him with a story about a rich man who slaughters a poor neighbour's only lamb. David is furious at the rich man. Nathan answers: you are the man. Puritan England picked the name up in the seventeenth century, New England kept it, and it has never really left English-speaking use since.

Because it does not date. Nathan sat comfortably inside the American top 100 while whole cohorts of names arrived, peaked and vanished around it, which means it belongs to no particular decade and reads as neither trendy nor antique. Nate does a lot of the work too: it is short, warm, hard to make silly, and available from birth.
