History & meaning
Latin had an ordinary phrase for a date of birth, natalis dies. The early Church narrowed it to one birth in particular, and by the time it had worn down through Old French into nael and then noel, it meant simply Christmas. English borrowed the word twice: once as the shout in a carol, spelled Nowell, and once as a name. Medieval parents gave it to children born in the Christmas season, the same logic that produced Pascal for Easter babies and Valentine for mid-February ones.
Norman French carried Noel into England, where it survived quietly as both given name and surname before reviving in the nineteenth century. The playwright Noel Coward, born on 16 December 1899, lent it a certain wit in the twentieth; the Gallagher brothers gave it a Manchester accent in the 1990s. It has never been fashionable enough to date a child, which is much of its appeal.
Why parents choose it
The obvious reason is a December due date, and Noel remains one of the very few seasonal names that sounds like a name rather than a greeting card. The less obvious reason is its shape: two syllables, no silent letters, recognisable in French, Spanish and English without adjustment, warm without being soft.

Famous Noels
Noel Coward wrote Private Lives, Blithe Spirit and several hundred songs. Noel Gallagher wrote most of Oasis. Noel Fielding created The Mighty Boosh and later hosted The Great British Bake Off. Between them the name has held a firm place in British public life for a century.
Consider instead
