History & meaning
The second half of this name is a compressed sentence in its own right. Ṣẹ́ is to break or defeat; ogun is war; fuse them and you get ṣẹ́gun, to conquer, which is how modern Yoruba says victory. Set olú, the Lord, in front of it and the name reports an outcome: the Lord has defeated the war. Names in this register are prayers of record, and they are rarely abstract. A Yoruba proverb makes the logic explicit — ilé ni a ń wò kí á tó sọ ọmọ lórúkọ, we look at the house before we name the child. The name is commentary on what the household has just come through: a difficult pregnancy, a long dispute, an illness survived, a business pulled back from the edge.
Olusegun is also the best page on this site for the writing system, because it needs all of it. Written Yoruba puts a subdot under three letters: ẹ is the open vowel of "bed", ọ the open vowel of "law", and ṣ is simply "sh". On top of that it marks three level tones — high with an acute, low with a grave, mid left bare — and tone is lexical, not ornamental. Famous Oluseguns
Olusegun Obasanjo led Nigeria twice: as military head of state from 1976, when he handed power to an elected civilian government in 1979, and again as elected president from 1999 to 2007. Olusegun Mimiko governed Ondo State from 2009 to 2017. In the clipped form, Segun Odegbami was the winger who scored twice in the final as Nigeria won the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in 1980.
Consider instead
Olumide keeps the prefix and trades the battlefield for an arrival. Akintunde, "the brave one has returned", puts the valour in the subject rather than in the verb. Adekunle, "the crown has filled the house", has the same four-syllable heft with a domestic image.
