History & meaning
The story arrives first and the name second. Orion is a giant hunter, a son of Poseidon in the commoner tellings, who hunts alongside Artemis until something goes fatally wrong — a scorpion in some versions, the goddess's own arrow in others — and is set among the stars afterwards. Homer knows him in both the Iliad and the Odyssey, where Odysseus sees him in the underworld still driving game across a field of asphodel. The sky preserves the ending: Scorpius climbs above the horizon as Orion sinks below it, so the two are never on show together.
The word itself is a blank, and it is worth being straight about that. The Greeks had no idea either. One ancient account derives it from ouron, urine, on the strength of a story in which Zeus, Poseidon and Hermes conceive the hunter by relieving themselves on an ox-hide, which is plainly a tale invented to explain a name rather than an explanation of one. Others reached for oros, mountain, or hōra, season, and got nowhere. The modern consensus is that Orion belongs to the pre-Greek layer of Aegean vocabulary, inherited from a language nobody can now read. So Orion does not mean hunter. Orion was a hunter. Why parents choose it
It is the most recognisable constellation in the northern winter sky and one of very few space names that has been a personal name for millennia rather than a decade. Three syllables give it room, the N ending keeps it current, and Ori is a soft nickname tucked inside a formidable name.

Famous Orions
No widely known person carries Orion as a first name, so what follows is cultural presence rather than a roll of bearers. The constellation is the one nearly everybody can find. NASA named its crewed deep-space capsule Orion, and it flew uncrewed around the Moon on Artemis I in 2022. Orion Pictures released Dances with Wolves and The Silence of the Lambs in consecutive years, and both won Best Picture. The name is attached to remarkable things; it has simply not yet been attached to a household name.
