When Jewish scholars in Alexandria translated the scriptures into Greek they wrote the name as Ozias, and that spelling passed into the Gospel of Matthew and from there into the King James Bible — which is why the same man appears as Uzziah in the Old Testament and Ozias in the New.
The king behind the name held the throne of Judah for roughly fifty-two years in the eighth century BC. Second Chronicles 26 credits him with rebuilt fortifications, engineered siege machines and a reorganised army, then records his fall: he burned incense in the temple, a duty reserved to priests, and was struck with a skin disease that kept him apart until his death.
