Latin Paulus meant small, and Italian did less damage to it than most of its neighbours: the -au- survived as a spoken diphthong, so Paolo still has the shape of the Roman word. Six popes have used it, most recently Paul VI, who closed the Second Vatican Council in 1965 and was the first pope in a century and a half to leave Italy. In Italian church calendars 29 June belongs jointly to Peter and Paul, which for centuries made it one of the standard days to name a son.
The name's centre of gravity in Italy is art and sport. Paolo Uccello spent his nights on perspective drawings while his wife complained about it, and left the Battle of San Romano panels; Paolo Veronese filled Venetian walls with banquets so lavish the Inquisition asked him to explain one of them. Then the footballers, who are how most of the world now meets the name: Paolo Rossi scored six goals at the 1982 World Cup and took Italy the whole way, and Paolo Maldini played twenty-five seasons at Milan and won five European Cups without ever seeming to hurry. Paolo Sorrentino has since taken the name back to the arts, and Paolo Banchero, born in Seattle and capped by Italy, has carried it into the NBA.
